What is PMC?
Many of my pieces are created using sterling silver precious metal clay (PMC). This is a clay made up of finely ground precious metal particles, water, and an organic binder. It can be shaped, textured, embossed, and manipulated like any other clay. After drying, the piece is carefully cleaned up and sanded, then fired in a kiln, where the water and binder burn off and the metal particles are fused together in a process called sintering. The end result is a silver piece slightly finer than sterling (96% fine silver and 4% copper).
What's the best way to care for my oxidized sterling silver jewelry?
Oxidized silver jewelry must be treated differently from your shiny silver jewelry when it comes to care and cleaning. Here are a few tips on prevention and removal of tarnish while preserving the beautiful patina that you love:
- Never use a commercial jewelry cleaner on your oxidized silver jewelry. This will strip away the oxidization.
- Store in a cool, dry place.
- Keep away from paper and wood. A fabric-lined jewelry box or plastic case is a better choice.
- Gently polish with a soft, non-abrasive cloth after each wearing. Be careful to concentrate only on the raised portions so as not to rub away the oxidization.
- Polish with a cleansing cloth pre-loaded with a specially formulated tarnish-removing compound, again concentrating only on the raised surfaces.
- For certain items with deep oxidization, I recommend laying the cloth on the edge of a flat surface and rubbing the piece on the cloth to avoid removing the oxidization from the crevices.
